What is a uric acid test?
A uric acid test measures the amount of uric acid in your blood or urine. Uric acid is a waste product that your body produces when it breaks down substances called purines, which are found in many foods.
Why is it done?
This test is often performed to:
Diagnose gout: High uric acid levels in the blood can lead to gout, a painful condition caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints.
Monitor gout treatment: If you have gout, your doctor may use this test to monitor the effectiveness of your treatment.
Diagnose kidney stones: High uric acid levels can contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
Assess the risk of kidney stones: If you have a family history of kidney stones or other risk factors, your doctor may use this test to assess your risk.
How is it done?
Blood test: A healthcare professional will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm.
Urine test: You may be asked to collect a 24-hour urine sample. This involves collecting all of your urine in a container over a 24-hour period.
What do the results mean?
The normal range for uric acid levels varies depending on the laboratory. Your doctor will interpret your results and discuss any abnormal findings with you.
High uric acid levels can be a sign of gout or other conditions. Your doctor may recommend treatment to lower your uric acid levels.
Low uric acid levels can be a sign of certain medical conditions, such as Wilson's disease or Fanconi syndrome. If your uric acid levels are low, your doctor may order additional tests to investigate the cause.
It's important to note that a high uric acid level doesn't always mean you have gout. Other factors, such as dehydration, certain medications, and diet, can also affect uric acid levels.
